Soil Finder: What's Under Your Garden?

Find your suburb below to see what's likely going on beneath your garden, and what it might be trying to tell you.

Perth's soil changes more than most people realise - sometimes from one side of a street to the other. Knowing what you're working with is the first step to a garden and lawn that actually thrives, not just survives.

    • Soil type: Spearwood sand over limestone, with pockets of soft, low-lying alluvial ground near the old Claisebrook waterway.

    • How it affects plants: Limestone pushes soil pH alkaline near the surface, which can lock out iron and other nutrients even when they're present.

    • What you may notice: Yellowing leaves with green veins on plants that "should" be thriving, especially natives and acid-loving species.

    • Soil type: Spearwood sand - calcareous, free-draining, limestone-influenced.

    • How it affects plants: Drains fast and holds nutrients better than sand further inland, but alkalinity still limits what grows well without adjustment.

    • What you may notice: Established gardens performing reasonably, but new plantings struggling to establish in the first season.

    • Soil type: A transition zone - Bassendean sand over limestone, with reactive clay pockets appearing as you move toward Bayswater.

    • How it affects plants: Inconsistent results across a single property.

    • What you may notice: Patchy lawn performance, or garden beds that thrive in one corner and struggle a few metres away.

    • Soil type: Bassendean sand - part of the same inland sand belt as Mount Lawley, Bayswater and Maylands.

    • How it affects plants: Pale, low in organic matter, and poor at holding onto phosphorus or potassium.

    • What you may notice: Lawns and beds that respond well to feeding for a week or two, then fade again.

    • Soil type: Bassendean sand - pale, low in organic matter, among the least fertile soil types in the world.

    • How it affects plants: Water runs straight through instead of being held, and nutrients leach out before roots get the chance to use them.

    • What you may notice: A lawn or garden that needs constant watering and feeding just to hold its ground.

    • Soil type: Alluvial soil with pockets of heavier, reactive clay.

    • How it affects plants: The opposite problem to the sandy suburbs - water struggles to drain away.

    • What you may notice: Waterlogging after rain, soggy patches that take days to dry out, or plants that seem to be "drowning" rather than drying out.

    • Soil type: Bassendean sand, generally the purest expression of this system in the corridor.

    • How it affects plants: Very low phosphorus and potassium retention, water-repellent in summer.

    • What you may notice: Watering that seems to "disappear," and lawns that brown off quickly in heat.
